Alaska Nanooks Nordic Skiing and Cross Country use a variety of trails all around the Fairbanks North Star Borough to best train for their seasons. Here are a few trails in which they frequent and why:
The UAF Trail System offers a great variety of easy terrain for winter and summer training. They are very conveniently right on campus, which often saves us time for studying.
The Birch Hill Trails are definitely the most challenging trails in the Fairbanks North Star Borough and because of that, we often use them for competition preparation. They have harsh uphills and downhills as well as a lot of turns which makes them a great way to challenge our athletes. However, they are always very well maintained, which makes our training very pleasant all year around.
The Fairbanks Bike Trails are a crucial part for the teams’ training to prepare for their seasons. They are safe and give the athletes a variety of training surfaces, the athletes use the trails for running, biking and roller skiing during the summer.
Ester Dome Singletrack is great for longer runs in early fall when the birches are all golden. The teams also use the Ester Dome road for time trials. The longer trails mixed with the uphill climbs makes for great training for both teams!
